Dogs possess a distinct ability to anticipate and respond to humans. Of course, one of the contributing factors that helps develop a trusting relationship in humans and dogs is its ability to connect. We can figure out how they are feeling based on their actions and behaviors.

Hence, we can often ask whether dogs do the same as humans. Do they have the ability to predict if we are happy or sad? Can they guess that we are in a state of depression or threat? There are some clues that a dog is sensing despair.

Indeed, dogs can feel depression, and they respond in a caring way to humans to cheer them up. By using their unique sense of smell, they can predict hormone production in their environment and can detect the rise and fall of certain brain chemicals. Naturally, when we are depressed, we produce more sweats wherein our dogs can perceive that and react in an appropriate way.

For example, you will know that your dog is sensing that you are in great sorrow when he comforts by being more close to you than usual. Also, your dog may come near you in a calm way as shown by a tail lowered rather than moving and alert. Also, body language clues, namely, head tilting, paw raised, and licking, are some signs that you might have observed if your dog is sensing depression.

Other signs that you might notice if your dog is smelling depression may include playing, approaching you slowly, and leaning into you. Dogs are not just emotional animals. They began identifying various smells of humans to the emotions and feelings that these humans exhibit. Thus, dogs build a unique relationship with humans and develop mutual learning through their different experiences.
